Niagara‑on‑the‑Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant – Modernizing Essential Infrastructure for a Growing Community
Procon delivered complete electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, and SCADA systems for Niagara‑on‑the‑Lake’s upgraded wastewater treatment plant, enhancing capacity, efficiency, and environmental protection.

Building a More Efficient, Sustainable Treatment Facility
As Niagara‑on‑the‑Lake continues to grow, so does the demand on its wastewater treatment infrastructure. To support the community’s long‑term environmental and operational needs, the region initiated a major upgrade to the Niagara‑on‑the‑Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant—an ambitious project focused on increasing capacity, improving efficiency, and reducing noise and odour impacts. Procon was selected to provide all electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, and SCADA services, playing a central role in bringing this modernized facility to life.
The project required a coordinated, multi‑trade approach, integrating advanced treatment technologies with reliable, future‑ready systems. From new process buildings to upgraded pumping and disinfection systems, Procon’s team delivered the technical expertise and disciplined execution needed to support a complex, multi‑year build.
Comprehensive Multi‑Trade Delivery
The upgraded facility includes several major components, each designed to enhance treatment performance and environmental protection. Procon’s scope covered all mechanical and electrical systems across the following areas:
New Headworks Building Featuring raw sewage screening, grit removal, alkaline dosing, and an administration area, this building forms the first stage of the treatment process. Procon installed the mechanical systems, electrical distribution, and instrumentation required to support reliable, continuous operation.
Aeration Tanks and Secondary Clarifiers These critical process structures support biological treatment and solids separation. Procon provided the aeration equipment, process piping, motor controls, and monitoring systems that ensure stable, efficient treatment performance.
Service Building Housing the aeration system, RAW and WAS pumping systems, and coagulant storage and dosing equipment, this building required extensive mechanical integration and precise electrical coordination.
Disinfection Building Procon installed the sodium hypochlorite and sodium bisulphite systems used to disinfect treated effluent before discharge, ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
Sludge Thickening and Anaerobic Digestion These systems reduce waste volume and support more sustainable sludge management. Procon delivered the mechanical equipment, electrical feeds, and instrumentation needed for safe, efficient operation.
Odour Control System Designed to reduce impacts on nearby residents, this system required careful integration of fans, ducting, controls, and monitoring equipment.
Power, Reliability, and Control
To support the expanded facility, Procon installed a new 600V/2000A substation and an 800 kW standby generator, ensuring uninterrupted operation during outages. A fully integrated SCADA system provides real‑time monitoring, data collection, and process control, giving operators the tools they need to manage the plant efficiently.
A Facility Built for the Future
Completed between 2015 and 2017, the upgraded Niagara‑on‑the‑Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant stands as a critical investment in community health, environmental stewardship, and long‑term infrastructure resilience. Procon is proud to have contributed its multi‑trade expertise to a project that supports both present and future generations.
